Thanks for all the support over the weekend guys! We had a lot of interesting in Mania 17 and 18!
Venue: Safeco Field
The first few matches on this card were not that interesting at all for me, but the last 5 matches were crazy! Have we ever seen a card that had 5 quality matches at this quality to close out a show?
Chris Jericho vs Shawn Michaels
Shawn Micheals was out of action for 4 years due to his back injury. However, he returned in 2002, and this was his comeback at WrestleMania. In his way this year, was the amazing heel, Chris Jericho. Jericho pretty much dominated the whole of this match. He managed to hit an amazing Sweet Chin Music on HBK, one that Michaels would’ve been proud of! Shawn Michaels managed to grasp a hold in the match again when he reserved Jericho’s superplex from the top rope into a cross body.
Michaels attempted the Sweet Chin Music himself, but Y2J managed to duck it and apply the Walls of Jericho, which Michaels managed to break by getting to the ropes. Jericho didn’t waste anytime, and tried to start the offence again, but he was met with a wicked superkick. HBK then won the match with a roll up. After the match, both competitors hugged things out, but Chris Jericho hit his idol with a low blow, and walked away with his middle finger to the crowd – such a damn good heel move!
Booker T vs Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship
Well isn’t this an infamous match up! The whole storyline was built around a poor Booker T having to overcome so many hurdles in his life to get to where he is, and Triple H being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. It just all made sense for the heel champion to be gracious and put over the babyface, Booker T, who was legitimately over at the time. This was not the case however, as you probably know, Triple H retained his title here.
What annoyed me more than anything was that it was just down to one Pedigree. Booker T worked his socks off during this whole match, but there was only one Pedigree to defeat him. Most of the matches that I’ve covered have had a lot of false finishes and people kicking out of finishers. I enjoy seeing that at WrestleMania, and I think everyone in the stadium was confused when the referee counted to three, cause Triple H didn’t even hook the leg or anything.
There are loads of stories that Booker T was booked to win the championship until plans changed that day. If this was the case, then Booker T was robbed. He was the ultimate underdog at the time, and the build up to the match was excellent in my eyes. If they had Booker T win here, we would’ve had one of the most memorable WrestleMania moments ever, and there’s no doubt we’d still be talking about it to this day. Booker T did go on to win the World Heavyweight Championship, but did it have as much significance as what a win over Triple H at Mania would’ve done?
Hulk Hogan vs Mr McMahon in a Street Fight
Before this match started, we were shown an amazing promo video package. The whole feud was over Mr McMahon making Hulk Hogan the name he is now, and Hogan walking out on him and going to WCW. This was a perfect storyline for these two! There was a major dispute about who created Hulkamania, but one thing was for sure – if Mr McMahon won this, he’d be retiring Hulkamania.
The thoroughly enjoyed this match though. Both men were highly violent, and there was blood everywhere! The best spot of the match was by far Vince hitting a leg drop on Hulk Hogan off a ladder through the table! Towards the end, there was a surprise appearance from Rowdy Roddy Piper which was pretty amazing to see! After kicking out of multiple lead pipe shots, Hogan ‘Hulked up’ and hit 3 leg drops to keep his career alive. I’m surprisingly impressed with this match up!
The Rock vs “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
This match was centred around The Rock’s anger at not being able to defeat Stone Cold on the grandest stage of them all. The Rock was heel at this time, but the fact that the crowd were still split on these two just shows how truly amazing both competitors are. This was another fantastic match between these two, but there was little that I hadn’t seen from them in their previous two matches.
The Rock played a great heel however, wearing Austin’s leather vest for a large proportion of the match. They both fought it out so hard between them. The Rock finally got his comeuppance as he had to hit 3 Rock Bottoms to Steve Austin to win the match. It looked like the second one legitimately hurt Stone Cold though! As I said before, a lot of this match we had seen with each other stealing their opponent’s finishing moves. It’s a slight knock on an amazing match. WrestleMania 17 will have to be my favourite match between the two however!
Kurt Angle vs Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship
This WrestleMania has been superb so far, and it’s just amazing that we had another world class match. Kurt Angle had be using so many heel moves over the weeks prior to this match, that Stephanie McMahon was forced to announce that if Angle got disqualified or counted out, he would lose the championship. In ring wise, this is the best match on the card for me.
Talk of this match is always dominated why Lesnar’s botched Shooting Star Press. Aside from this, every move was executed perfectly well. It seemed to me that Lesnar pulled off way more moves in this match than he does now? I like Lesnar back at this time because he was doing more moves, and he was there every week. One positive about him now is that it’s massive when he does show up, and he’s portrayed as such an unstoppable beast.
Lesnar managed to kick out of Angle’s pin directly after The Beast pretty much landed on his neck. Both men got up and Lesnar hit an F-5 for the third time, which Angle could not kick out of. They then hugged it all out at the end of this match to close out the show. What a match, and what a night.
This has probably been my second favourite WrestleMania, of course behind X-Seven! I loved the baseball stadium as the venue, and the whole feel of the night just felt special! Thanks for reading guys, and I really hope you are enjoying all of these blog posts! I thought they’d be hard to do, but I’m loving writing every single one of them. WrestleMania XX will be up tomorrow!
